deZRECHTS – Pod Zemí EP

  [BBaRak 2002]

* I got to know this classic Czech band just after releasing their demo tape - I got to know not them, but their music. Anyway, I recieved their demo on CD-r from one of the founders of BBaRaK Records from Prague with some vinyl singles. Many years later I managed to get their next EP, released officially. It was a kinda introduction to the full-length dicography later. Nice, warm beats made off samples taken from the old, communistic big beat songs, good rappers with nice lyrics about life... Pleasent, short record from out southern neighbours.

LOOPTROOP - Fort Europa

  [David Vs. Goliath 2005]

I mnie to smakuje.

* I became a fan of this Swedish rap group quite fast - soon after listening totheir first official album 'Modern Day City Symphony'. I downloaded their demos from SoulSeek and I was waiting for their upcoming projects, both solo and together. And I recieved many of them, album number three among the others - but I managed to get this one many years later. And the memories came back: great, rocking music made by DJ Embee, who's blending hip hop with ragga in a way that only LoopTroop can do that. Swedes rhyme in English with no mistakes, their revolutionary and socialistic lyrics kick the system - the record is strong and uncompromised again. Despite the nice beats and great choruses. It's clear that Promoe, Embee, CosM.I.C. and Supreme have an idea to sell the anarchy as a sweet product. And I enjoy it.

HYENAS IN THE DESERT – Die Laughing

     [Slam Jamz 1996]

No, ale płyta wyszła w wytwórni Chuck'a D, więc raczej rap? I to jaki! The Source (nomen omen) również zjechali płytę (2,5 majka), zarzucając Hienom zbyt daleko posuniętą surowość i niepotrzebną brutalność... Hardkorowy, podziemny klasyczek.

* I bought this tape in Koszyki Market hall, when it existed as a chaotic bazaar. There was a shop with second hand books and baskets of tapes for cheap. So I dug out there Hyenas and some more tapes (Da Brat, Freak Nasty and sixth album from Whodini) - I didn't expect much, because such covers like this were dealing rather with metal... But the album came out in Chuck D's label, so maybe rap? Yes indeed! Short but very solid record is an essence of underground hardcore rap. Music was made by Gary G-Wiz (yes, this white guy from the Bomb Squad) and it is raw and full of disturbing sounds, with percussions hitting in the head. And rapper Kendo is raw and uncompromised as well as the beats. How can a rapper sound when u know that he was removed from Main Source for being too hardcore? The Source gave the album 2,5 mics, accusing the band of being too raw and brutal... Despite the review, the EP still remains in the memory and the speakers of the fans and I really like it too and refresh it from time to time. It's a pity that these guys haven't released anything since then - they still remain active, but separate. Hardcore, underground classic.

LUPE FIASCO – Drogas Light

     [1st & 15th 2017]

Dominuje tu nowoczesność, trapy i elektronika, choć owszem, wpadną czasem bardziej klasyczne dźwięki. Generalnie, album jest niezły, ale zdecydowanie brakuje mu wiele do debiutu i 'T&Y'.

* After releasing genious 'Tetsuo & Youth' Lupe got free from the claws of Atlantic records and he went independent. As a result he gave us his sixth album - he didn't have a lot of new material, so he dug out some old stuff from the vaults. It was supposed to be a better version of 'Lasers' - a pity, that Lasers was one of the worse albums from Lupe... some of the tracks are dope tho - not only lyrically as always, but also the music is lit, but unfortunately some tracks are unbearable. The material is dominated by modern sounds, trap and electronics, but yes, indeed, we have some classic inserts. Generally, the album is not that bad, but it is far after the debut and 'T&Y'.

THE MIGHTY UNDERDOGS – Droppin' Science Fiction

    [Definitive Jux 2009]

*This album just couldn't be wack. Rooty, thick beats from Headnodic rock the vibe and on them beats we can listen to Lateef and one of my favorite emcees, Gift Of Gab. Anyway, the album lacks something to be perfect, especially when it comes to the rappers - seasoned, whatever you say. The tracks are made weird, but maybe that was the concept behind - guys are droppin science fiction, right? I don't want to say that it is a bad record - despite the negative reviews in the press. But there's something here that doesn't let you enjoy fully. But I like to come back to it and Gift rules anyway.

KOOL SAVAS – Aura

   [Essah 2011]

* I like Savas since Plattenpapzt's producing album, where Kool showed up with a song 'King Of Rap'. His debut made me sure that it is worth to check him out regularly. This is his third album (I don't count the John Bello mixtapes), it lasts only half an hour, but it let him to get his first gold. It's a bit more electronic that the previous ones - sometimes even just electro, but it is for the sake of the album. Well, not every song here is dope, some just fall into typical German rap from that period. I can't say it is a bad record, but it didn't get me on my knees. A bit forced, but during those 34 minutes I found some good moments.

WYCLEF JEAN – The Preacher's Son

   [J 2003]

Missy Elliott niszczy system wraz z 'Party to Damascus', świetną robotę robią Scarface, Prodigy, Rah Digga, czy Redman, a w jamajskich klimatach dogrzewają klimat Elephant Man i Buju Banton.

* Wyclef, as a member of Fugees is now a part of history with a legendary status. Having such a great resource of respect, he went solo and he did whatever he wanted. As a result we had plenty of records, that sound... differently. First albums sound proper for Fugees fans, but then Clef started going back to his Haitian roots. It is already shown here, on his fourth record. We have every type of sound here - we have modern rap (as for '03), classic NY vibe, ragga, soul and other Carribean variations. This album is varied, but I must admit that it has got some strong moments - especially when other rapper comes in. Missy Elliot distroys the system with 'Party to Damascus', we have excellent job done by Scarface, Prodigy and Redman and some ragga legends, as Elephant Man and Buju Banton. Due to those guest vocals I listen to this album with pleasure, Wyclef could not bare to put this thing up - despite his undoubted musical talents. So we have quite a nice record here.
