* Roots Manuva to gość 'niebylejaki' - klasyk na wyspach. Mimo to nie patrzyłem przychylnie na jego kolaborację z Wrong Tom'em - wszak na albumie są tylko remiksy, kawałki i odrzuty w nowych wersjach. A mój punkt widzenia zmienił się o 180 stopni, kiedy wreszcie album nabyłem i włączyłem. Producent sporządził wspaniałą mieszankę dub i reggae, która pulsuje, łapie za kark i prowadzi prosto do Zion. A Roots - facet brzmi, jakby urodził się na Jamajce (właściwie to rodzice są z Jamajki), a jego kawałki w wersjach dub brzmią co najmniej tak samo dobrze, jak oryginały. Bardzo fajna rzecz.     

* Roots Manuva it ain't yo average rapper - he's classic on the Islands. I wasn't much into his collabo with Wrong Tom - there are only remixes, songs in new versions and some leftovers. But my point of view turned upside down when I bought the album and played it. The producer managed to prepare outstanding mixture of dub and reggae, which pulses, grabs your neck and leads you straight to Zion. And Roots - he sounds great, just like he was born in Jamaica (actually, his parents are from there) and his dubbed songs sound at least as good as the original versions. A very nice thing.

GANG STARR – The Ownerz

     [Virgin 2003]

* Wyznam wstydliwie, że pierwszy mój kontakt z szóstym albumem GS to było wtedy, kiedy dostałem od DJ Spox'a... okładkę, aby Guru się na niej podpisał. Robiłem wówczas wywiad z Guru i Solarem po ich drugim koncercie w Warszawie i poza singlem 'Skills' nic mi ta płyta nie mówiła. Kupiłem ja jakiś czas później i wcale się nie rozczarowałem. Jednak Guru i Premier to sztos, a solowe płyty Guru (zwłaszcza z Solarem) to już nie to samo... Tu jednak jest sam konkret, kolejne świetne podkłady Preemo i jego skrecze oraz sam Guru, wspomagany nie tylko przez kolegów (MOP, Freddie Foxxx, Krumbsnatcha, Big Shug, Smiley, NYG'z), ale i przez znane gwiazdy (Jadakiss, czy Snoop Dogg - to było wówczas co najmniej zaskakujące). Guru i Preemo nie wynaleźli prochu, ale trwają przy swoim - co sprawdza się od pierwszej płyty. A jeśli się sprawdza, to po co to zmieniać? Ostatni krążek zostawia niedosyt - niedługo po mojej kolejnej rozmowie z Guru, rapper umarł. A chwalił się, że rzucił picie i palenie i żyje zdrowo...

* I am a shamed of myself, because my first contact with the sixth Gangstarr's record was when I got a cover from DJ Spox - he wanted me to give it to Guru to sign it. I was doing an interview with him and Solar after their concert in Warsaw, but except for the single hit 'Skills' I didn't know anything more from this album. I bought it many years later and I wasn't disappointed at all. Guru and Premier are lit, but Guru's solo albums are not the same - especially those with Solar... This one is pure solid concrete, again dope beats by Preemo and his scratches and of course Guru himself, supported by his mates (MOP, Freddie Foxxx, Krumbsnatcha, Big Shug, Smiley, NYG'z) and some other stars (Jadakiss or Snoop Dogg - that was surprising at that time!). Guru and Preemo didn't invent anything new, but they keep their own - and it has paid off since their debut. And if it works, why to change it? Last album leaves you not fully satisfied - soon after we spoke in Warsaw, Guru died. And he bragged that he quit smoking and drinking, he's living healthy now... Damn.

MÓJ WYWIAD z GURU  (trochę się rozjechał przez lata, ale większość jest)

SHYKA – Wielkie Shu...

   [MTJ 2008]

* W życiu bym tego nie kupił, gdyby nie to, że leżało w koszu za grosze. I okazało się, że nie było się czego aż tak obawiać. Łódzki zespół, pełen nołnejmów, poradził sobie z debiutem całkiem sprawnie. Pozytywnie zakręcona muzyka, grana na żywo z rapperem na mikrofonie. To płyta, która miała z założenia być inna, niż wszystkie - i to się udało. Może nieco irytować hurra-stylistyka, ale w gruncie rzeczy to jest lekka płyta dla każdego. Trochę funku, rocka, ragga, zmieszanych z hip hopem - niby nic szczególnego, ale u nas nadal brakuje takich projektów. A ten ma ponad dekadę! Nadspodziewanie dobre, ale może dlatego, że spodziewałem się zupełnego kibla.

* I wouldn't buy this if it wasn't for cheap on sale. And it turned out that I didn't have to worry at all. This crew from Łódź city, full of no names, managed this project quite nice. Positive vibe, live music with a rapper on the mic. This album was supposed to be different that others - and they succeeded. Well, some listeners may be a bit irritated by the hurray-style, but basically it is a light music for everyone. Some funk, rock, ragga and hip hop - nothing special, but it lacks such kind of projects here in Poland. And this one is over 10 years old! Unexpectedly good - maybe because I thought it is a kind of bullshit.

DORASEL – Unleash The Beast

   [Rap-A-Lot 2001]

* Trochę to dziwny album jak na krążek z Rap-A-Lot. O ile produkcja jest niezła i kilka beatów przypomina ten klimat typowy dla wytwórni, to kilka kawałków jako żywo wydaje się być zrobione przez Dr. Dre. A tak nie jest. Ale to nie koniec. O ile Dorasel w pierwszym numerze imituje Method Mana, to potem jest to głównie tania wersja Ice Cube z okresu Westside Connection. Prościutkie teksty, podobna barwa głosu i styl rymowania. Ogólnie słucha sie tego dość dobrze, pomimo paru wypełniaczy, ale nie jest to zbyt ambitny album. Ot, kolejny patus wyciągnięty z pierdla z biletem do normalnego życia. Można posłuchać, ale bez szału. 

* It is a kinda strange album as for Rap-A-Lot. The production is tight and some beats are quire typica for the label, but some of the tracks seem to be made by Dr. Dre - but that's obviously not truth. But this is not the end. Dorasel flows like Method Man on the first song, but later it is rather a cheaper version of Ice Cube from the times of Westside Connection. Simple lyrics, similar voice and style of rhyming. Generally it is listenable except for some fillers, but it ain't too ambitious. Just another hoodlum taken away from the jail with a ticket to a normal life. You can listen, but there's nothing special.

* Usłyszałem singiel 'Flowrider' i odpadłem - ależ ten kawałek ma moc! Jak nie przepadam za produkcjami SoDrumatic, to akurat tutaj dał ogień. Całość albumu jest bangerowa i mocno energetyczna, choć pozostałe podkłady nie działają na mnie aż tak bardzo - są dość przeciętne. Rapperzy zaś... Kobra ma sporo wpadek warsztatowych, zdarza mu się omsknąć z flow, czasem coś słabiej poskładać. Bezczel zaś, jak to zwykł czynić na płytach Fabuły, śmiga po werblach jak szalony, przyspiesza, zwalnia, sypie rymami w nieskończoność - technicznie jest nie do powalenia. Ogólnie, słyszałem lepsze płyty, ale ta nie jest zła.  
* I heard the single 'Flowrider' and I fell out - damn this cut has power! As I am not a fan of SoDrumatic beats, this one is fire. The whole album is a banger and really energetic, even if the rest of the music is not so outstanding - they are quite average to be honest. Rappers... Well, Kobra makes some technical mistakes, he tends to skip the flow and put some verses in a worse way. Bezczel, as he used to do on Fabuła records - he flows on the beats as wicked, he speeds his flow up to slow the pace after some bars, the rhymes flow on constantly - his skills are crafted. Generally, I heard better albums, but this one ain't that bad.

THA 4ORCE – Final 4ormation

* Uwielbiam łowić takie okazje! Kosztują parę groszy, bo nikt ich nie chce, leżą i czekają na zmiłowanie, uśmiechają się do mnie, a ja je biorę. I BUM. Drugi album 4orce, producenta, DJa i inżyniera dźwięku z Anglii to bomba. Fantastyczne podkłady, wykorzystujące klasyczne brzmienia, żywe instrumenty i sprawdzone patenty niosą ten album w górę, a sam rapper utrzymuje ten wysoki poziom. Sporo bragga i szacunku dla hip hopu, ale pojawiają się również poważne tematy. Album nie jest długi, ale tak konkretny, że ma się go ochotę włączyć raz jeszcze. Jedna z lepszych brytyjskich pozycji, świetna rzecz! 

* I love finding such occasions! They cost only a little, because no one wants them, they lay on the table and wait till someone has mercy on them. They smile at me and I take them. And BOOM. Second album of 4orce, the producer, DJ and recording engineer from England is a bomb. Fantastic beats, using classical sound, live instruments and checked ideas take this album up and rapper keeps the bar on the high level. A lot of bragga and respect for hip hop, but also some serious topics. The album ain't too long, but it is so solid, that u just want to play it again. One of the best British publishings, great thing.

ZAGMADFANY – The Dobrze

  [Erem 2008]

* Nie kupiłbym tej płyty, gdyby nie to, że leżała w koszu za grosze. Nie bardzo wiedziałem, kto to jest i odsłuch nie powiedział mi wiele więcej - tyle, że z pewnym zdziwieniem zorientowałem się, że gościnnie jest tu nie tylko Numer Raz, Kfiat z Siły Dźwięq, ale i Hemp Gru. U nołnejmowego rappera z Iławy? Ale powoli połączyłem kropki... Iława? Znajomości u wyjadaczy sceny? ZagmatFANY? Funny? Iława? Parafun? Bingo! To przecież solówka jednego z najstarszych legalnie wydających w Polsce rapperów! Wow. W szoku, myślałem, że już dawno jest nieaktywny... A na płycie, poza gośćmi, jest muzyka - bardzo nierówna, łącząca hip hop, ragga, beatbox i różne inne rzeczy. I mimo swojej różnorodności niestety trochę męczy. Sam Funny wciąż ma braki warsztatowe, choć i tak jest lepiej niż dekadę wcześniej. Dobrze (The dobrze), że jego teksty są szczere i pozytywne i w sumie dają płycie kopa. Ale podsumowując, to dość średnie wydawnictwo.

* I wouldn't buy this record if it wasn't in a sale basket for small dimes. I didn't know actually who dat is and listening didn't tell me much either. But I noticed with kinda surprise that the album features some popular Polish rappers: Numer Raz, Kfiat from Siła Dźwięq and Hemp Gru. At no name rapper's record from Iława town? But then I connected the dots... Iława? He knows many people from the scene? ZagmatFANY? Funny? Iława? Parafun? Bingo! This is a solo album from one of the longest recording rap artists in Poland! Wow, I thought he was not active for a long time... And on the album, except for the guests, there's music: not even, mixing hip hop, ragga, beatbox and other different things. And despite that diversity, the music makes you a lil bit tired. Funny's an experienced rapper, but his technique and skills are still medocre, but better than ten years ago. Good that the lyrics are honest and positive and this is probably the biggest advantage of the record. But generally it is just an average thing.
